NorthLit - a New Nordic Literaturefestival
NorthLit 20th – 24th June, 2018
NorthLit is a new Nordic literature festival in Aarhus. Every year we focus on a new area or hotspot in the world, and this year we target the Middle East and North Africa.
Few Danes are exposed to nor read Arabic literature because it’s rarely translated into Danish. We want to change this by combining Nordic and Arabic literature and nuancing the view of the Middle East and tell another story rather than the usual news of terror, civil war and refugees.
We are proud to present an extensive programme with a wide range of Danish and Arabic authors from around the world like Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Algeria, Lebanon, USA, France, England, Finland, Sweden, Norway – and Denmark.
The Festival will take place at ARoS, Testrup Folk High School and Godsbanen from 20th to 24th of June, 2018.
For four days there will be readings, translations, book productions and publishing, interviews with authors, a graphic workshop with drawings, prints and graphic novels at ARoS. There will also be a political seminar at Testrup Folk High School as well as a St. John’s Eve party to wrap up the festival with speeches by the bonfire in several languages. We will party to the break of dawn with the Danish band Skammens Vogn and the Egyptian orchestra El Dor El Awal.
NorthLit starts Wednesday, 20th of June at 7.30 pm at ARoS with a reception and a discussion between Danish author Suzanne Brøgger and Iraqi author Hassan Blasim, who has been called “perhaps the best writer of Arabic fiction alive” by The Guardian.

Activities at ARoS
In the large auditorium at ARoS Public, you will find daily interviews with the festival headliners. At the salon Arabic translators will be finalizing their manuscripts with the original authors followed by the books’ immediate publication. We also publish books written by three pairings of Nordic and Arabic authors. In the Open Studio graphic novelist Halfdan Pisket and his Lebanese colleague Joseph Kai will create drawings and posters which will be printed at the festival.
We wish to give the audience a unique experience by dissecting the creative process giving a different view of literary process. We wish to create unexpected meetings and have a new and innovating approach to literature. At NorthLit you will meet translators and authors discussing their works as well as people working in all aspects of publishing. During the festival, we publish original works, translations and art for the participants to bring home.
Political seminar - Both Sides of the Curtain: The Fact About Fiction and Other Stories
In the wake of the so called ‘Arabic Spring’, we have experienced a discussion of ‘facts’ versus ‘truth’. In the Arabic World the problem of censorship and totalitarian leaders who make use of their own alternative ‘facts’ and ‘truths’ is nothing new. How do these problems affect the citizen, the reader and the user of social media across national borders? What about the freedom of speech and the right to pursue real facts and truths?
And what role does literature play in these questions?
Where does literature fit in this new media equation?
How can literature and authors contribute?
And is it required of them to reflect directly on these questions?
These are some of the questions that will be discussed during this seminar on Testrup Folk High School Friday the 22nd.
The seminar will be moderated by Adam Holm
Nordic Poetry Stage
At NorthLit we’re naturally looking forward to hear some of the most talented Nordic writers perform. Thursday the 21st you will have the opportunity to experience Stig Larsson (S), Morten Langeland (N), Caspar Eric (DK), Emeli Bergman (S), Lone Aburas (DK) and many others perform live on stage. Together they will paint their picture of the current state of Nordic poetry. Nordic Poetry Stage is a collaborative initiative by Testrup Folk High School and Literature on the Stage (LIPS) and will take place at Åbne Scene at Godsbanen.
